Volleyball Drops Conference Opener

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State opened its 2000 Mountain West Conference season with a four-game loss (2-15, 9-15, 15-8, 10-15) at the University of Utah. With the win, the 18th-ranked Utes improved to 9-1 (1-0 MWC) while the Aztecs fell to 6-7 (0-1 MWC) as they saw their four-match winning streak snapped.

Three Aztecs (Nicole Akporiaye, Aspen McPartland, Amy Hallquist) had eight kills apiece to lead SDSU which managed a team hitting percentage of just .090 for the match.

Aztec sophomore setter Melissa Wright had 27 assists to go along with her team-best 12 digs. In addition, senior Erin Grady continued her strong play at the net, recording four blocks (1 solo, three assists) on the night.

SDSU was unable to overcome Utah's strong offensive showing led by McKelle Stilson who talled 15 kills, three blocks and a .438 hitting percentage. As a team, the Utes posted a .207 hitting percentage with six total team blocks.

San Diego State continues its conference-opening road trip with a match at eighth-ranked Brigham Young on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. (MDT) in Provo, Utah. The Aztecs then return home to face 20th-ranked Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, September 26, at 7:00 p.m. in Peterson Gym.
