San Diego State got goals from four different players en route to a 4-1 victory over Loyola of Chicago at the Loyola Marymount Fall Classic being contested in Los Angeles this weekend. The win improved the Aztecs' record to 3-4 on the season as Loyola dropped to 5-3.
Senior Brett Lasby opened the scoring for SDSU, chipping the ball over Loyola goalie Tim Caprez off an assist from Matt Williams in the 36th minute. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Sapanli doubled SDSU's advantage just before haftime after taking a pass from defender Kyle Wiggs and putting the ball away.
The Ramblers pulled one back in the 56th minute when Brian Contreras head home a cross from teammate Matt Klacko. However, SDSU got goals from a pair of freshman in the final half hour to seal the win.
Forward Mike Klotovich restored the Aztecs' two-goal advantage when he scored in the 64th minute with an assist to Enrique Tovar. It was Tovar's team-leading fourth assist of the season. Freshman Ronnie Silva completed the scoring with eight minutes left with Williams claiming his second assist of the game.
The game was evenly contested with SDSU enjoying a slight 17-15 edge in shots. Aztec goalkeeper Brian Barnes was called upon to make three saves, all in the second half while Caprez was credited with four stops on the day.
After an off day on Friday, the Aztecs will return to Loyola Marymount to take on the host school on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 3:00 p.m. The Lions fell to San Jose State, 2-0, in Thursday's night at the LMU Fall Classic.
San Diego State returns home to the SDSU Sports Deck on Tuesday (Sept. 26) when it will face Cal State Northridge at 4:00 p.m.
