Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight

San Diego - San Diego State used a balanced combination of solid hitting and timely blocking to defeat UC Riverside three games to one Tuesday evening in Peterson Gym at SDSU. The victory evened the Aztecs' record at 6-6 while UC Riverside, in its first season as a member of Division I, fell to 2-9.

Freshman outside hitter Zlatina Anguelova led San Diego State with 15 kills, a .440 hitting percentage, 10 digs and five blocks. UCR's Rosanna Parizek had a team-high 10 kills for the Highlanders, hitting .500 for the match.

SDSU got off to a quick start, controlling the temp and winning the first two games (15-4, 15-7) handily. However, Riverside came to life in game three behind the play off Parizek, winning by a score of 15-5 to force a fourth game. The Aztecs resumed control once again, shutting out the Highlanders in the final game to claim the victory.

Senior Erin Grady, who ranks among the national leaders in blocks this week, improved on her average of 1.77 per game as she totaled nine for the match Both Grady (.778 hitting percentage) and setter Melissa Wright (.667 hitting percentage) were errorless on attack for the Aztecs as well.

As a team, San Diego State turned in a season-high .365 hitting percentage for the match, despite a .189 attack percentage in game three when UCR hit .450 as a team.

The Aztecs are now set to begin Mountain West Conference play with road matches at 18th-ranked Utah this Friday (Sept. 22) and eighth-ranked Brigham Young on Saturday (Sept. 23) before returning home next Tuesday (Sept. 26) to host 20th-ranked Loyola Marymount in Peterson Gym.
