San Diego - San Diego State got goals from five different players as it defeated visiting Cal Baptist 5-0 at the SDSU Sports Deck Monday afternoon. The win improved the Aztecs to 2-4 as they broke a four-game losing streak. The Lancers fell to 3-2 on the season.
SDSU struck first in the 10th minute when a low cross from midfielder Enrique Tovar on the right deflected to the front of goal soph Abraham Martinez was able to slide in and knock in his first goal of the season. The Aztecs doubled their advantage in the 38th minute with Tovar again assisting on the goal when a rebound of his shot was put in by Brett Lasby.
San Diego State opened up a three-goal lead some seven minutes after halftime when midfielder Kevin Sapanli put his free kick from the right side onto the head of Carlos Menjivar who nodded the ball home.
The Lancers found themselves a man short in the 64th minute when midfielder Victor Stager was shown the red card for a violent foul, and the Aztecs used the man advantage to add to their goal total. Tovar notched his first goal of the season in the 71st minute, taking a cross form Matt Williams on the left and beating it by Cal Baptist goalie Robert Turner. Sophomore Ryan Ivkovich completed the scoring, putting the ball into the net from range after a pass from teammate Ryan Curtis.
The Aztecs controlled much of the game, outshooting the Lancers 22-8 on the afternoon. Cal Baptist did have some chances, mostly in the first half when SDSU's Brian Barnes was called upon to make three saves. Back-up goalie Tim Edwards came on at halftime and had a relatively quiet 45 minutes, making one save.
Up next for San Diego State is a tournament at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles where they will face the host Loyola of Chicago on Thursday (Sept. 21), then meet host LMU on Saturday (Sept. 23).
