SAN DIEGO - For the first time in the history of the program, the San Diego State women's soccer team has lost five consecutive games. The Aztecs fell to 2-6-0 on the year after losing, 5-2 to No. 18 Washington at the adidas Invitational in Portland on Sunday.
In what started as a close game, SDSU and UW (7-1-0) were deadlocked at two at halftime. The Huskies, however, took over in the final 45 minutes to come out with the victory.
As usual, the Aztecs were led by junior midfielder Fay deLeon, who scored her team-best fourth goal of the year on a blast from long range. Freshman midfielder Nikki Torruella found the back of the net after hitting home a corner kick that was played out to her by Nicole Findlay for her first goal at the collegiate level to round out the scoring for SDSU.
The Aztecs have given up 14 goals in their last three games, a total which is the highest in a three-game span in the history of SDSU women's soccer. During the Aztecs' five-game losing skid, SDSU has been outscored, 18-5.
The Aztecs will look to come out of their losing streak when they head to Tempe, Ariz., to battle the University of Massachusetts at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22. That game will mark the end of a seven-game road swing as well as the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
SDSU will return home to take on Long Beach State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
