SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team dropped its fourth straight game when No. 23 Portland handed the Aztecs a 4-0 defeat in the opening game of the adidas Invitational in Portland, Ore., on Saturday.
SDSU (2-5-0 overall) fell behind early, when Pilot defender Lauren Orlandos scored in the 11th minute, and was never able to recover. Portland's Emily Patterson added an insurance goal in the 31st minute to give the Pilots a 2-0 lead at the half. Portland (7-0-0 overall) got two second-half goals from forward Vanessa Talbott to put the Aztecs away.
SDSU head coach Chuck Clegg, in search of more firepower in the Aztec lineup, inserted freshman forward Kim Castellanos into the starting lineup for the first time in her collegiate career and moved Nicole Findlay into the midfield. However, the Pilots were able to meet the challenge, limiting SDSU to nine shots on the game.
Aztec midfielder Fay deLeon led the way for SDSU, putting all three of her shots on frame in a losing effort. Goalkeeper Linnea Qui?ones, who faced a constant barrage of shots in the first half, continued to struggle in her starting role. Although Qui?ones established a season-high by recording six saves in the first half, her goals against average fell to 2.34 on the year (her career GAA going into this year was 1.18.)
Things don't get any easier for the Aztecs, who take on No. 18 Washington at 2:15 p.m. tomorrow in Portland.
