San Diego - San Diego State jumped on Brigham Young starting pitcher Micah Mangrum for six runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Cougars by a score of 16-5 in a game played in Provo, Utah, on Friday.
With the win, the Aztecs improved to 27-26 overall and 15-10 in Mountain West Conference play while BYU fell to 26-24 and 14-12 in league. In doing so, SDSU strenghtend its hold on second place in the conferernce, extending its lead over the third-place Cougars to a game-and-a-half with four games remaining before the MWC post-season tournament.
After managing only eight hits in the series opener on Thursday, San Diego State exploded for 23 base hits in game two. However, they needed only three hits to put up a six-run first inning as the Cougars contributed a pair of walks, a hit batter and an error.
BYU put up single runs in each of the first three innings, but the Aztecs put together another six-run inning in their half of the fifth, powered by a three-run home run by designated hitter Jacob Minter and a two-run shot by first baseman Chad Chop. At that point, SDSU had built a 14-3 lead and effecrtively put the game away.
All nine Aztec starters had at least one hit with center fielder Chad Redfern enjoying his best day of the season at the plate, going 5-for-6 with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in. Minter also had a stellar day at bat, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI's.
Senior pitcher Jeremy Cook picked up his sixth win of the season, going the distance for the first tine this season to improve to 6-4.He gave up just four earned runs while striking out four and walking only two. Mangrum, who didn't get through the third inning, took the loss to drop to 7-7 on the year.
The Cougars and Aztecs conclude their three-game series on Saturday (May 6) at noon at Cougar Field in Provo. Then the Aztecs return home to face UC Riverside on Tuesday (May 9th) at 6:00 p.m. as they begin a four-game homestand to conclude their regular season.
