PALM DESERT -
Scott Piercy's attempt to claim medalist honors at the Mountain West Conference Championship, concluded in disappointment today. The junior of Las Vegas, Nev., could not make up the ground needed, despite parring for the round. Piercy finished third overall at the inaugural conference championships, two strokes off the lead, held at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course in Palm Desert, Calif.
It marks the third consecutive year, SDSU has had an individual place third in the conference finals. James Stewart and Magnus Carlsson did it at the Western Athletic Conference tournament in 1998 and 1999, respectively.
Piercy led SDSU to a fifth-place finish with a final score of 308-286-303-897. Ninth-ranked UNLV had all five players place in the top 10 on its way to winning the MWC Championship. Michael Kirk keyed the Rebels' victory with a 209, seven-under-par. He grabbed medalist honors, edging Colorado State's Nigel Spence, who finished second with a 210.
The Aztecs could not duplicate Tuesday's two-under 286 team performance, diminishing any thoughts of a last day comeback. Senior Magnus Carlsson shot one-over, to go 223 for the tournament and finish 21st.
