Despite firing a one-over par on the final day of competition, the San Diego State men's golf team will not make a return appearance to the NCAA Nationals to be held in Auburn, Ala., on May 31-June 2. The Aztecs finished 18th at the NCAA West Regional played at the par-72 Riverbend Golf Course in Madera, Calif. SDSU concluded the three-day event with a final score of 297-297-289-883.
The top ten teams qualified for NCAA Nationals, joining the top 11 from the East region and nine squads from the Central region. Arizona grabbed the west title ending at 25 strokes under. Meanwhile, the last spot wasn't decided until California beat out Stanford and Idaho in a three-team playoff that went down to three holes.
Pacing the Aztecs was freshman Lars Johansson who fired a one-under today en route to a 218 for the event and tied for 52nd. Scott Piercy had SDSU's lowest score of the day with a blistering two-under 70. Piercy finished three-over 219. Ryan Donovan carded a 74 this afternoon capping off one of his best performances of the year. The Yorba Linda native finished with a six-over 222. In their last collegiate action, seniors Magnus Carlsson and Larry Correa shot a 74 and 77 respectively. Carlsson concluded his two-year career at Montezuma Mesa with an eight-over 224 at the west regional. Correa ended the weekend at 238.
