The San Diego State men's golf team shaved 22 strokes off of Monday's total and Aztec junior Scott Piercy moved into the hunt for medalist honors after two days at the Mountain West Conference championships in Palm Desert.
The Aztecs took sole possession of fifth place with a two-under 286 today, for a 594 two-round total. The Aztecs trail No. 11 New Mexico by 10 strokes for fourth-place.
Ninth-ranked UNLV remains in first place with a 286 second-round and a 566 overall score. The Rebels are holding off Colorado State, which continues its solid play with a 283 and is six-under. Tenth-ranked Brigham Young made the biggest jump, shooting a low-round of 280, bringing its score to even entering the final round at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course in Palm Desert.
SDSU had a far better performance from each individual on Tuesday, paced by Piercy. He shot a blistering four-under 68 and improved to five-under for the event. He currently sits in second place, two strokes behind Colorado State's Nigel Spence (137, -7).
Senior Magnus Carlsson shot a 73 to go five-over 149 and is tied with several others at 21st. Larry Correa (151, +7) parred for the day, moving himself into a tie for 26th. Lars Johansson had the most improvement with a nine-stroke differential from yesterday, carding a one-over-par and is tied for 30th overall. Ryan Donovan had an equally impressive round, shooting a four-over 76. He sits alone in 34th.
The first-ever MWC team title will be decided tomorrow. Tee time is scheduled for 8 a.m. Results, along with the inaugural All-Conference team selection will be available at 5 p.m. (PST).
