Round One Of The NCAA Men's Golf West Regional Is Complete

San Diego State opened the 2000 NCAA Men's Golf Western Regional with a nine-over 297. The Aztecs enter round two in a tie with Pepperdine University for 18th. SDSU stands just seven strokes back from Oregon (290), who holds the last qualifying spot for the NCAA Nationals at tenth place.

Eleventh-ranked Brigham Young leads the field of 27 teams, firing a 12-under 276 at the par-72, 6,966 yard Riverbend Golf Course in Madera, Calif. BYU has three players among the top 10 individuals, led by Manuel Merizalde's five-under 67. Ninth-ranked Arizona is in second-place after carding a 280 (-8).

Individually, the Aztecs are led by freshman Lars Johansson. The freshman of Karlshrona, Sweden shot a one-under 71 and is tied for 24th. Scott Piercy, SDSU's No. 1 golfer, and senior Magnus Carlsson each are tied for 78th after carding a 75 today. Junior Ryan Donovan finds himself tied for 93rd, shooting a 76, while senior Larry Correa shot an 80 and is tied for 119th overall.
