WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Fatigue and No. 3-ranked Wake Forest proved to be too much for the San Diego State women's tennis team, as the No. 29-ranked Aztecs were defeated by the Demon Deacons, 5-0, in an NCAA regional final match at WFU's Upper Eight Courts, Sunday.
It is only the second time this season that San Diego State (16-10) has suffered a shut out and the first time the Aztecs failed to win at least one set. The Aztecs advanced to today's regional final with a 5-4 first-round win over South Florida on Saturday that took over five hours to complete.
"Wake Forest has a very strong team," SDSU head coach Peter Mattera said. "They are probably the best team we have played this season. But our kids competed hard and I'm proud of them. We had the lead in may of the games, but just couldn't put them away."
Wake Forest (23-2), which set a school record for victories in a season with the win, captured the No. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 positions in straight sets to seal the victory. The Demon Deacons will face No. 18 Tennessee when round of 16 play begins at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., on May 18.
