MALIBU, Calif. -- - Freshman Oliver Maiberger ran his singles winning streak to 20 with a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles to lift the No. 31-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team to a 4-3 win over No. 30 Washington in the first round of the NCAA men's tennis regional at Pepperdine, Saturday.
It is the second straight year that SDSU (16-7) has advanced to a regional final. The Aztecs will face No. 8 Pepperdine, a 4-0 winner over Tulsa, in Sunday's second round. The meeting will be a re-match of an earlier contest between the two schools in Malibu this season won by the Waves.
Washington (15-9) captured the doubles points and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead behind victories in the No. 2 and 3 slots.
However, the Aztecs came roaring back in singles, taking four of the six positions to secure the win. Aztec senior Alex Waske improved to 13-1 on the season with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Washington's Matt Hanlin at No. 1 to get things rolling for SDSU. Freshman Valentino Pest and junior Matt Bere then followed suit with straight-set victories in the No. 3 and 5 singles spots, respectively, before Maiberger's dramatic win at No. 2.
