San Diego - UNLV's Ryan Olson limited San Diego State to just two hits in a complete-game effort as the Rebels defeated the Aztecs 8-3 in a game played at Tony Gwynn Stadium Friday evening. Olson's performance was his second excellent outing against the Aztecs this season as he tossed a three-hitter at them in Las Vegas in an 8-1 complete-game win earlier in the season.
San Diego State did not helps it cause any by committing five errors in the game, allowing UNLV to jump out to a 6-0 lead after three innings. Half of those runs were unearned and were all Olson would need to improve his record to 6-2 on the year. SDSU starter Jeremy Cook saw his personal four-game win streak come to an end as he dropped to 6-5 on the season.
Olson held the Aztecs hitless until the seventh inning when Paul Lockhart's one-out single broke up the no-hitter and fueled SDSU's only run-scoring inning of the night. Brandon Rogers double in the same inning drove in two runs, the he scored on an error by the Rebel right fielder.
With the loss, SDSU drops to 29-27 and 16-11 in the Mountain West Conference. UNLV moves to 23-30 overall and 16-11 in league play. With Utah losing to Air Force today, the Rebels still have a chance to move into fourth place in the final standings. For that to happen, they would have to win the next two over the Aztecs and have Air Force defeat Utah on Saturday. San Diego State has already wrapped up second place and the number two seed at next week's MWC Tournament.
The SDSU-UNLV series continues on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium and concluded on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
