Aztecs Struggle In First Round Action of Conference Championship

The San Diego State men's golf team opened the Mountain West Conference golf championship with plenty of ground to be made up in the final two days. SDSU shot a 308 (+20) and is currently tied with Utah for sixth-place after round one of the 54-hole conference championship held at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course (6,921 yards, par 72) in Palm Desert, Calif.

Ninth-ranked UNLV has the lead after day one of the championship with a 280, while Colorado State had the most surprising round of the day with a one-under 287.

Individually, the Aztecs are led by Scott Piercy. Piercy, a junior, shot a one-under 71 and is in sixth-place. Senior Magnus Carlsson is tied with a group of others for 22nd after shooting a four-over 76. Carlsson's classmate, Larry Correa, shot a 38-41-(79) and sits in 31st. Junior Ryan Donovan and freshman Lars Johansson had rough going. Each shot a round of 82 and are tied for 33rd overall.

Round two of the MWC Men's Golf Championship is set to tee off at 8 a.m. tomorrow. Results are expected to be available by 5 p.m..
