San Diego, CA-For the fifth consecutive year, San Diego State women's crew has won the Patty Wyatt Cup in women's varsity-eight. SDSU, ranked 21 in the most recent USRowing Coaches Poll, took four-of-five events from inner-city rivals San Diego and UC San Diego in the City Championships held at Fiesta Island on Mission Bay this morning.
The win marks the second time SDSU has captured the Patty Wyatt Cup as Division I program. The previous three victories came as an SDSU club team.
In the tightest race of all morning, SDSU's varsity-eight held off USD in the 2000 meter race by five seconds. The Aztecs posted a final time of 7:11.0, while USD placed second, racing to a time of 7:16.0. SDSU's junior varsity squad came in third after rowing to time of 7:22.0.
SDSU's novice eight also had a good showing. The Aztecs bested a good USD crew squad and others by a large margin. San Diego State's lightweight four made its season debut and promptly smoked the competition, finishing 16 seconds ahead of second place finisher UCSD "A." SDSU's novice four posted the final win of the day.
The Aztecs travel up north to Sacramento, Calif., to compete against 24 of the nations best crew teams in California at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Conference Championships.
