SAN DIEGO - UNLV got a complete-game pitching performance from freshman Ryan Olson and defeated San Diego State, 8-1, in a game played in Las Vegas Friday evening. The win was the Rebels' (8-25 overall) first Mountain West Conference victory after beginning their league season with nine straight losses. The Aztecs fell to 20-18 overall and 8-5 in conference play.
SDSU got on the board first on Paul Lockhart's seventh homer of the year, a solo shot in the bottom of the first. However, SDSU only got a pair of singles, one each from Billy Montgomery and Brandon Rogers, over the final eight innings off Olson.
The Rebels came back with three runs in both the third and fifth innings. Junior first baseman Trent Kitsch led the UNLV offense with an RBI double in the third and a two-run homer in the fifth.
Olson, whose threw his second consecutive complete game, improved his record to 2-1. Aztec freshman Chris Hartshorn (4-3) took the loss after throwing six innings, allowing six runs before giving way to Chris Dunwell in the seventh.
The Aztecs and Rebels continue their three-game series on Saturday, April 8, at 1:00 p.m. at Earl Wilson Field in Las Vegas.
