In what could be consider as a preview of this year's NCAA men's golf West Regional, San Diego State posted a team score of 288-289-299-(876) and finished 14th at the 54th Annual Western Intercollegiate Championship held at the 6,445 yard, Par-70, Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif.
Practically running away with the team title in the 20-school championship was Fresno State (838), with Pepperdine taking second place honors after firing a final score of 845.
Individually, the Aztecs were led by senior Larry Correa. Correa place tied for 34th by carding a 70-71-78-(219). Junior Scott Piercy scored SDSU's second-best numbers with a 75-73-72-(220). Senior Magnus Carlsson dropped significantly in the final day with a round of 80 for a final score of 221. Sophomore Chris Galeski, playing in just his second spring tournament, fired a 74-77-73-224 tying for 70th with teammate Ryan Donovan. Donovan, a junior at SDSU, shot a 73-75-76-224.
Today's finish marks just the second time for 1999-00 season that the Aztecs have not placed among the top-10 in tournaments played.
SDSU will tune up for the conference championship when it travels to Provo, Utah to compete at the Ben Hogan Cougar Classic on April 21 and 22. The 54-hole event is hosted by Brigham Young and will be played at the Riverside Country Club.
