SDSU Is Short In Bid For Another Crew Classic Mark.

April 3, 2000

San Diego -

The 24th-ranked San Diego State women's crew team embarked on a great deal of success last year in its first season as a Division I athletic program. A win in the 1999 San Diego Crew Classic for the Cal Cup was one of many highlights the Aztecs celebrated. That victory helped Aztec crew become a formidable threat for many years to come.

This past weekend, San Diego State had the opportunity of making a bigger splash in the crew world, as it competed against the nation's elite in this season's Crew Classic regatta. By winning the Cal Cup from a year ago, the Aztecs automatically qualified for the Jessop-Whittier Cup. The battle for the cup included third-ranked Cal and eight-time winner Washington, which shares the No. 4 ranking with USC.

A disappointing time in the preliminary heats negated SDSU's chance in the grand final for the Whittier Cup. The Aztecs did race in the petite final and had a solid showing, finishing fifth out of six teams with a time of 7:00.8. Oregon State, ranked 17th in the nation, won the petite race with a time of 6:52.3.

City bragging rights will be up for grabs this Saturday, when SDSU, USD and UCSD face each other in the San Diego City Championships at Mission Bay. Races are expected to begin at 7 a.m.
