San Diego - San Diego State jumped on Air Force starter Erik Fisher for 10 runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Falcons, 14-9, in a game played Saturday afternoon at Falcon Field in Colorado Springs. The Aztecs' uprising was aided by four Air Force errors in that inning and a total of seven in the game.
With the victory, San Diego State improves to 26-24 on the year and 14-9 in the Mountain West Conference. The Aztecs trail first-place New Mexico by four-and-a-half games with seven league games remaining. Air Force falls to 20-25 on the season and 5-16 in MWC action.
Eight of nine starter connected for hits in the first inning as SDSU jumped out to what turned out to be an insurmountable advantage. Catcher Brandon Rogers contributed a two-run double while senior Paul Lockhart also had a two-bagger that drove in a run.
Shortstop Edgar Gonzalez, designated hitter Jacob Minter, and frosh third baseman Garrett Cook all had three hits on the day as SDSU connected for a total of 18 including five doubles.
Senior right-hander Jeremy Cook picked up the win, going the first seven innings to improve his season mark to 5-4. He received help from soph Chris Dunwell who threw the final two innings in relief. Air Force's Erik Fisher (6-7) suffered the loss.
Air Force and San Diego State conclude their three-game set on Sunday, April 30, at noon in Colorado Springs.
