The San Diego State men's golf team concluded the regular season on a positive note, with a fourth place finish at the highly competitive Ben Hogan Cougar Classic held this past weekend at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah. The Aztecs shot a score of 865 for the 54-hole, par 72 event.
Tournament host Brigham Young, ranked sixth in the nation, ran away with the title, firing an impressive 821 (-24) and took one through three in the individual slots. Twelfth-ranked New Mexico placed second while No. 10 Fresno State shot six strokes better than SDSU for third place.
Individually, the Aztecs were led by Scott Piercy's three-under 213. Piercy sizzled all weekend, carding a 69 (-3) in the opening round and stayed consistent with a pair a even rounds in the end. Freshman Lars Johansson also had a solid outing fighting off a first round 75 to shoot even during the second 18 and closed out with a strong three-under 69 to fire an overall 216 (E). Both Piercy and Johansson finished seventh and 13th, respectively. Junior Ryan Donovan finished one stroke behind Johansson with a 217 to tie for 18th place.
In their final regular season tournament, seniors Magnus Carlsson and Larry Correa shot a 225 and 226 respectively. Each finished among the top 60 individuals among the field of 94 competitors. Playing as an individual, John Lieber shot a 75-75-78-228 and tied for 68th overall.
The fourth place team finish is the ninth time this season SDSU has posted a top 10 finish in 12 tournaments. It also marks the eighth tournament the Aztecs have posted a top five showing, which includes team titles at the Real Del Mar Classic in the fall and at the Point Loma Invitational earlier in the spring.
SDSU will now prepare for the inaugural Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship which is to be held in Palm Springs, Calif. The 54-hole event will be held at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course. The three-day championship tournament begins with practices rounds on Saturday and Sunday (April 29-30) while the championship rounds tee off on Monday, May 1 and conclude on Wednesday, May 3.
