San Diego - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes scored three times in the top of the ninth to break a 2-2 deadlock and go on to defeat San Diego State, 5-3, in an exhibition game played at Tony Gwynn Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Quakes, the Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres who begin their California League season next Thursday, are skippered by Tom LeVasseur, a former Aztec who played under Jim Dietz during SDSU's 1986 WAC championship season.
San Diego State freshman Chad Redfern staked the Aztecs to a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run homer that scored Taber Lee who had walked earlier in the inning. The Quakes came back to tie the game with single runs in the third and fifth, the latter coming on an RBI single by former Aztec third baseman Alex Pelaez (1997-98).
Both teams used the game to give a number of pitchers some work as each side utilized seven hurlers.
The game remained tied until the ninth when Rancho Cucamonga struck three times off Aztec reliever Jason Clemenson. The big blow in the inning was a two-out two-RBI single by first baseman Shane Hooper.
SDSU came back with a run in the bottom of the inning and an RBI single by John Pashales, but could get no closer. Len Hart picked up the win for the Quakes while Shawn Camp threw the ninth inning to pick up the save.
The Aztecs now have four days to prepare for their next Mountain West Conference series at UNLV beginning Friday, April 7. They return home on Tuesday, April 18, to face Loyola Marymount at 5:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
