Softball Sweeps Colorado State

April 16, 2000

San Diego - The San Diego State softball team won both games of a doubleheader, 3-2, 8-7, against Colorado State Sunday at SDSU Field.

In game one, the Aztecs got things started in the third when Tiffany Goudy singled to left field, allowing Sandra Durazo to score from third base.

SDSU would add two more runs in the fifth. Kellie Labor scored on a wild pitch followed by a Christy Sears double to right center field, bringing home Tiffany Goudy.

The Rams struck back in the sixth with a Holly Schmillen home run and an Alyson Carter single to score Sara Hyzer.

Durazo shut down the Rams the rest of the way, earning the 3-2 victory.

In game two, Sarah Hershman smashed a two-run homer over the right field fence to get things started for SDSU in the first. The Aztecs would add four runs in the second on four hits and one error.

However, Colorado State was undaunted by the 6-0 deficit. The Rams began pecking away at the lead with two runs in the third and went on to tie the game with four runs in the fifth.

CSU would take the lead in the sixth when Schmillen scored on a passed ball by Durazo.

Faced with the possibility of a one-run loss, the Aztecs took control in the seventh. Ram hurler Sara Doherty walked Labor to open the inning. Hershman then singled to center field, advancing Labor to second. Goudy bunted to advance both runners. Sears hit to the Rams' shortstop, Schmillen, who then overthrew Ram catcher Alyson Carter, allowing both runs to score.

Durazo earned both wins on the day, going in the distance in game one and relieving Olivia Catron in the second contest. Her record now stands at 17-7.

The Aztecs improve to 25-21, 7-3 MWC, while Colorado State falls to 13-22, 5-5 MWC.

San Diego State returns to action for their final home games of the year on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. vs. St. Mary's at SDSU Field.
