SAN DIEGO - The fifth-ranked San Diego State women's water polo team defeated California Baptist, 8-4 and trounced No. 14 Loyola Marymount, 12-2, on Senior Day at Bud Kearns Pool.
In game one against Cal Baptist, the Aztecs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Lancers made a run in the fourth, cutting SDSU's lead to two goals, 6-4, but were held at bay by an Aztec defense which collected 16 steals in the game.
Larisa Baltgalvis and Amber Prestegard netted two goals apiece while freshmen Kristin Haddock and Natalie Nipper each scored the first goals of their collegiate careers. Senior Megan Dunbar recorded five thefts in the contest.
In game two vs. Loyola Marymount, the senior class of 2000 went out in style as the Aztecs coasted to the 10-goal victory. Baltgalvis, a senior and SDSU's all-time leader in goals and assists, found the back of the net four times while fellow senior Shannon Halpin scored once. Dunbar, SDSU's all-time steals leader, led SDSU with three thefts. Also playing in her final game at Bud Kearns was goalie Curran Teigen who recorded 12 saves on the afternoon. Prestegard assisted on four of SDSU's scores.
The Aztecs improve to 13-13, 4-5 MPSF, on the season and will return to action next weekend when they travel to Los Angeles to compete for a spot at collegiate nationals which will be held May 7th-9th in Bloomington, Ind.
