Baseball Defeats Utah As Lockhart Ties Home Run Mark

San Diego - Senior Paul Lockhart hit a pair of home runs to lead San Diego State to a 4-2 win over Utah in a game played Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City. With the two round trippers, Lockhart has tied the Aztec record for career homers, matching the total of 26 by Travis Lee (1994-96).

The win evened SDSU's season mark at 22-22 and improved the team's Mountain West Conference record to 10-8. The Utes fell to 17-23 overall and 7-10 in league play.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Aztecs got a run back in the second on an RBI-double by shortstop Edgar Gonzalez. Lockhart then gave San Diego State the lead with a two-run home run in the sixth inning, scoring Matt Ricardy who had singled with two out. Lockhart gave the Aztecs an insurance marker with a solo homer in the ninth.

Rory Shortell (3-3) started and threw 6 2/3 innings to pick up his third win of the season and first since a win over Air Force on March 26th. Sophomore Chris Dunwell recorded his first save of the year, shutting down the Utes over the final 1 1/3 innings. Utah's Brandon Page (0-1) took the loss in his second start of the year.

Outfielder Billy Montgomery continued his hot hitting with a pair of singles in four at bats while Gonzlaez was also 2-for-4. Lockhart finished the day with three hits including the two long balls and a single.

The Aztecs return to Tony Gwynn Stadium on Tuesday, April 18, to take on 26th-ranked Loyola Marymount at 5:00 p.m., then host New Mexico in a conference series beginning Friday, April 21.
