San Diego - The San Diego State softball team (23-21, 5-3 MWC) split a doubleheader with New Mexico (28-13, 6-2) Friday afternoon, giving the Lobos a one-game lead in race for the MWC regular-season title.
In game one, Sarah Hershman and Kellie Labor homered and pitcher Sandra Durazo did not allow a hit in the first five innings as the Aztecs coasted to a 5-2 victory over the Lobos.
The teams were knotted in a scoreless tie when Hershman stepped to the plate with two runners on base. She smashed the first pitch over the right field fence to get the Aztecs on the board.
San Diego State would strike again in the fifth when Labor hit a solo shot to right field. The final Aztec run of the game came on a Christy Sears double to left center field which brought home Tiffany Goudy.
The Aztecs tatooed Lobo hurler Danielle Cassara for 11 hits in game one. Goudy connected on three of those pitches, going 3-3.
Game two was a different story as New Mexico pitcher Kathy Moore tossed a three-hitter to stifle the Aztec bats. SDSU's Olivia Catron was almost equally impressive, scattering six hits in seven innings, but a Krissy Keene homer in the second inning amassed a lead which the Aztecs were not able to overcome.
San Diego State's only run came on a Catron ground out, allowing Tashie Agui?aga to score from third.
The Aztecs return to action this Sunday when they host Colorado State in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. The CSU twinbill has been dubbed Senior Day as the softball program will honor the four seniors on this year's team and their families.
