San Diego - San Diego State broke a 3-3 deadlock with five runs in the top of the seventh and went on to record an 8-4 win over the University of Utah in a game played Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City.
The victory brought the Aztecs (21-22) back to within one game of the .500 mark and improved their Mountain West Conference record to 9-8. With the loss, the Utes dropped to 17-23 on the season and 7-10 in league play.
Senior righthander Jeremy Cook picked up his third win of the season, allowing three earned runs on six hits through the first seven innings before giving way to reliever Mike Garber who allowed only one baserunner in his two innings of work.
With the game tied at 3-3, SDSU went ahead in the seventh when Rory Shortell scored from third on a fielder's choice by Edgar Gonzalez. Billy Montgomery followed with an RBI single with Chad Chop's single later in the inning adding two more runs. Second baseman Matt Ricardy capped off the five-run outburst with a single that scored Chop.
The win broke an six-game losing streak for the Aztecs and their eight runs was the most in the past 10 contests. Chad Redfern had a pair of doubles with two RBI's while Ben Leuthard and Montgomery chipped in a pair of singles each.
