SAN DIEGO - The 29th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis team rallied from a 3-3 tie after singles with wins on courts 2 and 3 in doubles, as the Aztecs downed No. 39 Fresno State, 5-4, on SDSU's East Courts Friday afternoon. It is the second straight 5-4 win for SDSU, which improved to 12-7 with the non-conference victory. Fresno State fell to 12-7 with the loss.
SDSU senior Lisa Papi team with freshman Katja Karrento on court No. 2 for an 8-1 win over FSU's Anke Beier and Kelly Ramirez to put the Aztecs up 4-3. The SDSU duo of sophomore Julie Chidley and freshman Lindsey Hedberg then clinched the match with an 8-3 victory over Kandiss Creighton and Liese Fichtbauer. FSU's Kim Niggemeyer and Renee Kops-Jones defeated the Aztec duo of Whitney Wells and Laura Aguero, 8-4, to provide the final score.
In singles, Fresno State got out to a fast start with wins on courts 1, 2 and 6. But the Aztecs responded with victories from Karrento, Hedberg and sophomore Katey Becker in the Nos. 3-5 spots to send the dual match into doubles tied at 3-3.
The San Diego women's tennis team returns to action on Sunday, April 16 when the Aztec host New Mexico at 10 a.m. in their Mountain West Conference regular season finale.
