San Diego - San Diego State continued its recent slump as it fell to Utah, 12-4, in a game played in Salt Lake City Thursday afternoon. It was the Aztecs' sixth consecutive loss and dropped their season record to 20-22 and 8-8 in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes (17-22 overall) climbed to within a game of third place as they improved their league mark to 7-9.
SDSU freshman Chris Hartshorn allowed 10 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits as his record fell to 4-4 on the year. Utah's Jared Cavaness threw a strong eight innings for the Utes and improved to 4-5.
The Aztecs struck in the opening inning on a double by Billy Montgomery and Paul Lockhart's RBI fielder's choice. After Utah answered with two of their own in the first, the Aztecs evened the score in the second on a sac fly by shortstop Edgar Gonzalez. However, Utah tallied 10 runs over the next five innings to secure the win.
SDSU got a pair of consolation runs in the eighth on a two-RBI single by catcher Brandon Rogers. The Aztecs managed only seven hits on the day, two by Montgomery.
The Utes and Aztecs continue their three-game series with games tomorrow (Friday, April 14) and Saturday (April 15) at Franklin Covey Field in Slat Lake city.
