San Diego - Texas Tech broke a 6-6 deadlock with eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and went on to defeat San Diego State by a score of 14-6 in Lubbock Saturday afternoon. The win improved the Red Raiders' season record to 11-8 while the Aztecs fell to 11-10.
After falling behind 5-1 after two innings, SDSU fought back to tie the game, evening the score at 5-5 on Brandon Rogers' solo homer, his fourth of the season, in the top of the seventh.
After Texas Tech responded with a run in the bottom of that inning, The Aztecs again leveled the score, this time at 6-6, when Sean Pierce scored from third on the front end of a double steal with Matt Ricardy at first in the top of the eighth.
However, The Red Raiders struck for eight runs in their half of the eighth on six hits, three walks, a pair of wild pitches and a balk. John Skinner, who had come on in relief of starter Chris Hartshorn in the third, took the loss and dropped his record to 0-4. Texas Tech's Steve Rowe, who threw the final four innings, picked up his second win of the year against no defeats.
For the Aztecs offensively, freshman Royce Ring got his second start at the DH position, and duplicated his effort of Friday night by going 2-for-4 with a double. Andy Litteral and Brand Rogers also picked up a pair of hits each in the losing cause.
The three-game SDSU-Texas Tech series concludes on Sunday afternoon in Lubbock with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (CST). The Aztecs then return home to take on 20th-ranked Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, March 7, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
