SAN DIEGO - Texas Tech's J.J. Newman pitched a complete game to record of his first win of the season as Texas Tech (10-8) defeated San Diego State )11-9) by a score of 11-3 at Dan Law field in Lubbock on Friday evening.
The Aztecs took a 1-0 lead in the game with a run in the first inning as Billy Montgomery scored from second on a two-out error by Red Raider shortstop Scott Holzhauer.
Aztec starter Jeremy Cook (1-3) sailed through the first three innings, retiring the first nine batters he faced while striking out five. However, the fourth inning was the turning point as Texas Tech scored five runs on five hits. Three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings for Texas Tech sealed the win.
The Aztecs out-hit the Red Raiders (10-9), but Newman was able to scatter them and keep SDSU off the scoreboard until a pair of eighth-inning runs. Royce Ring, making his first start at the DH position, was 2-for-4 with a double as was teammate Rory Shortell.
The three-game series continues on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (CST) in Lubbock.
