FT. COLLINS, Colo. - Freshman Jamey Cox poured in 27 points, including four three pointers, and grabbed a career-high five rebounds as the San Diego State women's basketball team shocked Colorado State 58-51 at Moby Arena, Saturday afternoon.
It was the second win the season over CSU for the SDSU (9-18, 4-9 Mtn. West), which held the Rams to a season-low point total.
"I can't say enough about how well we played this afternoon," said SDSU head coach Barb Smith. "To put together a win like this on the road is just huge for us, especially as we head to next week's conference tournament."
It was just the second road win of the year and first in conference play on the road for the Aztecs, who finished the regular season in seventh place in the Mountain West Conference and will face Brigham Young on Wednesday, March 8 at 2:30 p.m. (PST) in the opening round of the MWC tournament.
San Diego State actually trailed, 38-29 with 10:43 to play in the game before going on an 18-4 run over the next 5:22 to take a 47-42 lead with 5:21 to play. Cox, who finished the season with an SDSU single-season record 68 treys on the year, canned a two during the spurt and also added a lay-up. The Rams never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
Colorado State (19-8, 9-5 Mtn. West) was led by Heather Haanen's 16 points. The Rams, who opened the week with an RPI ranking of 39 and were tied for the MWC lead, fell to fourth after today's loss.
Despite scoring a season-low four points, SDSU senior Mary Apiafi pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds as SDSU outrebounded CSU, 38-32. Shannon Lee also dished out a career-tying-high 11 assists in the win.
Three ties and five lead changes highlighted the action in the first half. SDSU turned a five-point deficit into a four-point lead at 17-13 with 6:27 to go in the opening session behind an 11-2 run that including back-to-back treys by Cox. The Aztecs, however, managed just one more field goal the rest of the way as the Rams closed the half with a 8-3 spurt to take a 21-20 lead into intermission.
