San Diego - San Diego State used a five-run third innings to race out to an 8-0 lead and went on to defeat Air Force, 10-6, in a game played at Tony Gwynn Stadium Saturday evening. The victory was SDSU's third straight, matching their longest win streak of the season. The Aztecs improved to 17-15 (5-3 Mountain West Conference) while the Falcons fell to 14-14 (1-6 MWC).
SDSU struck quickly, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning on a Chad Chop RBI single that scored Andy Litteral from third base and advanced Paul Lockhart ot third. Chop then attempted to steal and got himself caught in a rundown that Paul Lockhart to score from third base.
After a single run in the third, the Aztecs put up a five spot in the fourth inning to take an 8-0 lead. The big blow in that frame was a two-out basses-loaded triple by Tyler Echelbarger that brought in three runs.
Senior right-hander Jeremy Cook cruised through the first five innings on the mound, but struggled in the sixth, allowing the Falcons to score four times. He still picked up the win, his second of the year.
SDSU responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, with Lockhart driving in Andy Litteral with a double. Lockhart then scored on a two-out error by Air Force Center fielder Mike Thiessen.
Eight of San Diego State's nine starters had at least one hit, Led by Lockhart who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a pair of RBIs and three runs scored. His two runs batted in upped his team-leading total to 28 on the season.
The Aztecs and Falcons conclude their three-game series on Sunday, March 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the SDSU campus.
