San Diego - San Diego State took advantage of five Air Force errors to defeat the Falcons, 6-1, in a Mountain West Conference contest played at Tony Gwynn Stadium Friday evening.
With the victory, the Aztecs improved to 16-15 on the season and 4-3 in league play. Air Force dropped to 14-13 (1-5 MWC).
SDSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks in part to three Air Force miscues. The Aztecs doubled their advantage to 4-0 with another pair of unearned runs in the third.
Billy Montgomery, Andy Litteral, Tyler Echelbarger and Matt Ricardy had two hits apiece for San Diego State with Echelbarger picking up a pair of RBIs.
Freshman right-hander Chris Hartshorn went seven innings to pick up his third win of the season. He struck out seven along the way and allowed the Falcon's their only run in the seventh on an RBI single by Brian LaBasco.
Matt Kaercher (4-3) was the hard-luck loser who gave up all six SDSU runs, five of which were unearned.
The Aztecs and Falcons continue their three-game series on Saturday, March 25, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
