The San Diego State men's golf team shot a season-low score of 868 in the 54-hole Oregon Duck Invitational held at the Shadow Hills Country Club in Eugene, Ore. The 40th-ranked Aztecs ended the two-day event at four-over par, firing a 291-291-286, en route to a fifth place finish out of 15 teams.
The University of Washington, ranked 21st in the nation won the invitational with a final score of 857, placing one stroke ahead of event host Oregon (858). Oregon State and Pacific finished third and fourth respectively.
The Swedish connection of Lars Johansson and Magnus Carlsson led the Aztecs. Johansson, a freshman from Karlshorna, Sweden, placed tied for 10th by firing an even-par 216. Meanwhile, Carlsson, a native of Helsingborg, Sweden, shot a one-over 217 and tied for 13th place. Junior Scott Piercy stormed back on the final day to fire the day's low round of 67 (-5). He ended the two-day event at two-over-par 218. Junior Ryan Donovan and fifth-year senior Larry Correa tied for 31st, finishing at six-over.
This is the seventh-tournament in which SDSU has placed among the top five teams out of nine tournaments played. The Aztecs already have two team titles and will search for their third at the Western Intercollegiate Championships. This year's championships are being held at the Pasatiempo Country Club in Santa Cruz, Calif. The two-day event begins with 36-holes on Monday, April 3, followed by the final 18-holes on Tuesday, April 4.
