With USD leading 3-2 in the sixth, a single by SDSU's Chad Chop was followed by Brandon Rogers being hit by pitch. an RBI double by Matt Ricardy scored Chop, and a two-out intentional walk to Billy Montgomery loaded the bases for Pierce.

San Diego State added a pair of runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to seal the victory. In addition to Pierce's output, SDSU also got offensive production from Ricardy (3-for-4, 2 RBI) and senior Paul Lockhart (2-for-3, run, RBI).
