San Diego -
The San Diego State men's golf team concluded two rounds at the Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate with a score of 596, leading the field of 19 teams, played at the La Purisma Golf Course in Lompoc, Calif. La Purisma Golf Course was the home of 1997 PGA Tour School Finals and is a par-72 that measures 6,6557 yards.
The Aztecs shot an opening round of 299 followed by a 301 score in round two. That score is good enough for a five-stroke margin over seventh-ranked Brigham Young and San Diego, both whom are tied for second place after 36-holes. SDSU enters the final day with the possibility of winning its second consecutive team title and its third in this season. Recently, San Diego State claimed the Point Loma Invitational and won the Real Del Mar Classic held in October in Baja, Mexico.
Currently, the Aztecs have three golfers among the top 10. Junior Scott Piercy and Senior Magnus Carlsson are tied for seventh overall. Each fired a four-over-par 144 for the afternoon. Carlsson had the team's lowest score of the day with a two-under par in round one. Both are ahead of BYU's Andy Miller (155), who is ranked 21st among individuals nationally.
Junior Larry Correa, who is coming off medalist honors at the Point Loma Invitational, sits in ninth place at five-over par. After a sluggish first round, freshman Lars Johansson came back strong in the second to fire a 74 and end the day at 10-over par (154). Johansson is tied with several others for 29th place. Meanwhile, Junior Ryan Donovan is one-stroke back from Johansson at 155 and is tied for 37th place.
The 54-hole Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate comes to a close tomorrow with the final 18-holes. Tee times are set between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m.
