The San Diego State men's volleyball team defeated Rutgers University of Newark, 3-2, on Monday at Peterson Gym. The Aztecs came back after losing game one to force a thrilling five-game match (13-15, 15-11, 10-15, 15-5, 15-10). The non-conference win improves SDSU's record to 4-12 overall.
The Aztecs were led by senior middle-blocker Mike Szymanski with 23 kills. Senior Sean Mackin added 18 kills and 10 block assists. The Aztecs received a boost off the bench from freshman outside-hitter Shaun Corby with 13 kills. SDSU's overall hitting percentage was a season-high of .369. Senior setter John Engstrom missed a triple-double by one dig. He finished with 74 assists, 10 kills and nine digs. Mike Koch also finished with a season-high .542 hitting percentage.
The Scarlet Raiders had three players finish with 18 kills, including Jeremy Desiron, Christos Tsamadias and Danko Iordanov. Rutgers record now stands at 7-10 overall.
SDSU returns to action on Wednesday, March 15, at Loyola Marymount. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
