Yuma, Ariz. - A second consecutive solid performance by the San Diego State bullpen helped the Aztecs win the second game of a three-game series against 23rd-ranked Oklahoma State in Yuma, Ariz. on Saturday.
After starter Chris Hartshorn gave up three runs in three innings of work, relievers Marcos Mendoza, John Skinner, Mike Garber and Rory Shortell combined to yield only two hits and no runs over the last six innings.
It was Mendoza, however, who stole the show. The Santee, Calif., native replaced Hartshorn in the fourth inning and threw 3 2/3 innings of one-hit ball to pick up the win.
The Cowboys had their chances to put some runs on the board, but Mendoza and company forced OSU to strand 13 runners in the contest.
Mendoza was not SDSU's only weapon, however.
Senior left fielder Paul Lockhart tied the game in the third inning when he hit a 1-and-2 pitch over the right-center field fence for a two-run home run off of Cowboy starter Frank Bludau. The Aztecs took the lead for good later that inning when Bludau walked SDSU center fielder Billy Montgomery with the bases loaded, scoring catcher Ben Rosenthal.
The Aztecs would add another run in the fifth, two in the seventh and three more in the eighth to put the game away.
Rosenthal went three-for-four with a triple and three runs batted in, while designated hitter Garrett Cook went three-for-three with a sac fly and two RBI to lead the SDSU offensive attack.
The series will conclude tomorrow at noon at Desert Sun Stadium when the Aztecs will look to make it three in a row over OSU.
