Feb. 5, 2000

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Lamont Long scored 23 points to lead New Mexico to a 78-57 victory Saturday over San Diego State. Long, averaging 23.5 points in the last four games, hit 8-of-14 shots and had six assists and five steals.

New Mexico (12-10, 4-3 Mountain West Conference) has won 15 of 16 games against San Diego State, dating to 1991.

San Diego State (5-15, 0-7) suffered its eighth straight loss. The defeat marked only the second time a Steve Fisher-coached team has lost 15 games.

Fisher, the former Michigan coach in his first year at San Diego State, lost 15 games with his 1990-91 Michigan team, his only losing season in eight-plus years at Ann Arbor.

The Lobos, who led 38-29 at halftime, outscored San Diego State 18-7 in the first six minutes of the second half to turn the game into a rout.

Kevin Henry scored 15 points and Tim Lightfoot added 14 off the bench for the Lobos, who shot 51.9 percent from the field. New Mexico was 9-for-20 from three-point range.

Myron Epps led San Diego State with 15 points. David Abramowitz finished with 13 points.
