The San Diego State women's tennis team suffered their first loss of the new millinium today at SDSU, falling 5-4 to the U.C. Irvine Anteaters (2-2).
Maureen Diaz defeated SDSU junior Whiney Wells 6-2, 6-1 to open the match, but the Aztecs quickly tied it at one apiece as freshman Katja Karrento beat U.C. Irvine's Jonni Seymour 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Darian Chappell, Natalie Exon, and Nickole Kabe then gave the Anteaters a commanding 4-1 lead by winning the Nos. 3, 4, and 5 spot matches, before SDSU's Laura Aguero defeated Carla Nasca in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Despite winning two of the three doubles matches, the Aztec's hope for a comeback was thwarted when Irvine's Chappell and Seymour defeated SDSU's top doubles team of Wells and senior Lisa Papi, 8-2.
The Aztecs' next match will be on Feb. 11, at Stanford.
