San Diego State swept UC Santa Cruz, 3-0, to get their first win of the season Friday night at Peterson Gym. The Aztecs improved their record to 1-5 (0-5 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation).
The Aztecs were led by senior outside hitter Mike Szymanski with 13 kills. Senior setter John Engstrom added 35 assists. Middle blocker Sean Mackin finished with 11 kills and a match high .714 hitting percentage. Freshman Phil Peterson tallied 7 blocks for the night.
The Banana Slugs were led by Mike Rubin, a native of San Diego, with 18 kills. UCSC's record now stands at 1-4.
SDSU returns to action on Wednesday, February 9, at USC. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. The next home match will be on Friday, February 11, against Stanford. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
