SAN DIEGO (AP) - Terrell Lyday scored 12 points and keyed a late first-half surge to lead Brigham Young to a 72-50 victory Thursday night over San Diego State, whose losing streak reached eight games.
Brigham Young (15-5, 4-3 Mountain West Conference) went on a 21-5 run in the final eight minutes of the first half to turn a five-point deficit into a 37-26 halftime lead. Lyday and Todd Christensen each scored eight points in the run.
San Diego State, which led 21-16 on David Abramowitz's three-pointer at the 8:54 mark, went cold as it failed to score for more than five minutes and had just one more basket the rest of the half.
Mekeli Wesley led Brigham Young with 15 points and nine rebounds. Michael Vranes scored 12 points and Christensen added 11 for the Cougars, who shot 54 percent, including 7-of-13 from three-point range.
Brigham Young broke open the game in the second half, extending its lead to 48-28 as San Diego State made only one basket in the first 6:22.
Marcelo Correa led the Aztecs (5-14, 0-6) with 13 points. Myron Epps, San Diego State's leading scorer, added just three points.
