SDSU Women's Golf Places Second In Spring Opener

SAN DIEGO -

The San Diego State women's golf team edged California by one stroke for a second-place finish at the Bay Area Classic. The Aztecs fired a team score of 606, marking their lowest score at a 36-hole event in 1999-2000. The second-place finish is their season best.

The 11th-ranked Pepperdine Waves won the classic, held at the Blue Rock Springs Golf Course (5823 yards, Par 71) with a final score of 587. The two-day event was co-hosted by the University of San Francisco and California.

Aztecs' sophomore Heather Rollo entered the final 18-holes in second place and maintained her position by firing a two-over-par 73 for the day. Senior Jill Janotta fell three spots from yesterday, firing a five-over-par 76 for a tie at 10th place. In her first action of the season, junior Nikki Stangarone shot a final-round of 77, en route to a 17th place tie. Making the largest improvement in the final round was Joanne Clingan. Clingan recovered from an opening round of 82 to shoot a five-over-par 76. She moved up 21 places, finishing 26th. Jennifer Hoene rounded out SDSU's scoring, firing the team's second lowest score of the afternoon with a 75 (+4).

The Aztecs return to action March 13 and 14, when they compete at the Pioneer Electronic Bruin Classic, hosted by UCLA. The two-day, 54-hole event will be held at the Menifee Lakes Country Club in Menifee, Calif.
