Feb. 23, 2000

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State earned both of this week's Mountain West Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Player of the Week awards. Alex Waske (Sr., Frankfurt, Germany) earned the men's honor by posting a win in both singles and doubles in his first action of the season. Whitney Wells (Jr., Fresno, Calif.) received the women's honor after she claimed wins at No. 1 singles and doubles in both of SDSU's victories during the week.

Competing in his first match of the season on Feb. 18, Waske claimed a three-set (6-7, 6-4, 6-2) win over No. 30 ranked Robert Kendrick of Pepperdine in the No. 1 singles position. Waske's win was the second of the day for the Aztecs who lost the match, 5-2, to the No. 7 ranked Waves. SDSU freshman Oliver Maiberger won the other team point in straight-sets over No. 58 Stefan Graeff in the No. 2 slot. In doubles play, Waske teamed with Travis Hasson in the No. 2 position to claim an 8-5 win over Pepperdine's duo of John Hui and Kendrick. SDSU is now 8-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Aztecs were also scheduled to face Air Force on Feb. 20, but rain forced that match to be postponed to a future date yet to be determined.

In leading the women's team to a pair of 8-1 victories over Loyola Marymount and Long Beach State, Wells won both of her No. 1 singles matches in straight sets. She defeated Edit Pakay of LMU, 6-4, 7-5 on Feb. 18, then downed LBSU's Mandy Carvalho, 6-3, 6-4 the following day. In doubles action, Wells paired with Laura Aguero for two wins in the No. 1 position. The duo defeated LMU's team of Pakay and Penka Fileva, 8-2 then claimed a tie-break win over Carvalho and Sophie Han, 9-8. The SDSU women's team improved to 3-1 on the season, while Wells also climbed to 3-1 overall in singles and stands 2-0 in doubles with Aguero.
