Casillan Leads Aztecs at MWC Championships

Feb. 19, 2000

OKLAHOMA CITY - The San Diego State women's swimming team ended the 2000 season by placing sixth out of eight teams at the Mountain West Conference Championships held in Oklahoma City. Brigham Young took home the championship trophy, while UNLV was a close second.

Aztec sophomore Meghan Casillan had an exceptional performance at the four-day meet. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native won the 100 and 200 backstroke events on her way to setting personal records in both. This is the first time since the program's reinstatement in 1994 that an individual has won a conference championship.

Fellow sophomore Heather DeFelice had three top-six finishes, including fourth in the 100 breaststroke, fifth in the 200 individual medley and sixth in the 200 breaststroke. Other Aztecs who clocked in 10th or better include freshman Erin Kilpatrick, who was second in the 400 individual medley, Mariana Luevano, who was fifth in the 200 butterfly and ninth in the 100 butterfly, and Tara Johnson, who touched the wall eighth in the 200 butterfly.
