SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State Aztec baseball team improved its record to 8-7 on the season after registering a 16-7 win at UC Riverside Tuesday afternoon. The loss dropped the Highlanders' mark to 5-2.
Junior Ben Julianel picked up his third win of the year against one defeat, going seven innings and allowing three earned runs. Riverside freshman Julio Fernandez (1-1) took the loss for UCR.
The Aztecs pounded out 18 hits against seven Highlander pitchers, led by outfielder Andy Litteral who was a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Joining him in the Aztec hit parade were outfielder Billy Montgomery (3-for-5 with a stolen base), Paul Lockhart (2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs) and freshman third baseman Garret Cook (2-for-4 with three RBI). Shortstop Edgar Gonzalez cracked his seconds home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth inning.
Up next for the Aztecs is a three-game series with Washington State beginning this Friday (February 25) at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Games on Friday and Saturday are set for 6:00 p.m. with a 2:00 p.m. game time on Sunday. The Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon contests will be broadcast live via the internet at the Aztec baseball website.
