SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's team needed just over two and a half hours to dispatch Saint Mary's, as the Aztecs rolled to an easy 8-1 victory in their 2000 season opener on SDSU's East Courts Wednesday.
"Overall I was very please with our effort today," said SDSU head coach Peter Mattera following the match. "This was a good win against a solid team. We just came out right from the beginning and took care of business. I thought we might let up after clinching the match in singles. But we kept after it, which is a good sign."
It didn't take long for the Aztecs to get on the board and put the match out of reach as five of the six singles positions were decided in straight sets. Junior Whitney Wells, who played at No. 4 all of last season for the Aztecs and was making her first appearance ever in SDSU's top spot, breezed past Saint Mary's Karen Holland 6-2, 6-0 to put the Aztecs up 1-0 early on.
Freshman Katja Karrento, sophomore Julie Chidley and senior Lisa Papi followed suit at Nos. 2, 4 and 5, respectively, to give SDSU a commanding 4-0 edge. Annie Wolford provided SMC with its only highlight of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over SDSU senior Laura Aguero to keep the Gaels alive. However, Aztec freshman Emile Bengtsson soon clinched the match for SDSU, defeating Mariko Miller 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the only three-set match of the afternoon.
SDSU took care of business in similar fashion in the doubles portion of the contest, sweeping SMC 3-0. SDSU sophomore Katey Becker and freshman Lindsey Hedberg were especially impressive in their 8-0 win at No. 2.
The Aztecs return to action Thursday when SDSU hosts UC Irvine at 1:30 p.m.
