30th-Ranked SDSU Men's Golf Struggles in Hawaii

Feb. 19, 2000

San Diego -

The windy conditions on the Hawaii Islands terrorized the San Diego State men's golf team all weekend, leading to a 15th place finish out of 20 teams at the 10th annual Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event was hosted by Hawaii-Hilo and held at the Waikoloa Resort's 6,566-yard, par-70 Beach Course and 6,594-yard, par-72 Kings' Course.

Labeled as a preview to the NCAA Division I Golf Championships, the three day event featured six of the top-25 teams. The nation's top team, Georgia Tech, captured the title by firing a one-under-par. Eighth-ranked Arizona State (+1) placed second, while Fresno State finished third.

Individually for SDSU, juniors Scott Piercy and Ryan Donovan led the way, finishing at six-over-par for a 26th place tie. Getting his first collegiate action, sophomore John Lieber had a solid overall performance, firing a 226 en route to a tie for 62nd place. Freshman Lars Johansson and senior Magnus Carlsson, both natives of Sweden, round out the Aztecs traveling five. Johannson fired a 231 while Carlsson shot a 234.

San Diego State returns to action at the Point Loma Invitational on February 28. The one day tournament will be held at the Singing Hills Country Club on Feb. 28.
