SAN DIEGO - Oklahoma State pitcher Josh Merrigan scattered eight hits over six innings and the Cowboy offense did the rest as OSU defeated San Diego State, 12-1, at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Thursday evening. It was the second game of the day in the ARCO Collegiate Invitational after University of San Diego had shelled Kansas State, 31-15, in the earlier contest.
San Diego State (6-6) took an early lead in the game on Paul Lockhart's third home run of the season, a solo shot in the third inning. Oklahoma State (4-3) came back with two runs in the fourth and fifth frames, then put the game away with six runs in the sixth inning.
SDSU starter Ben Julianel (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year while Merrigan improved his record to 2-0.
Soph Sean Pierce, making his first start of the season, went 2-for-4 while designated hitter Tyler Echelbarger also contributed a pair of hits.
SDSU continues action at the ARCO Collegiate Invitational on Friday when it faces Indiana at 6:00 p.m.
